I have nominated Ashley and Crowley for the (ACE) Exemplary Companion. Crowley and Ashley became a team as an 8-week-old puppy, and he excelled at all the basic training commands. Their love and respect for each other grew and then when Crowley was about a year old, tragedy struck. Ashley worked as a diesel mechanic and a 2-ton mower fell on her. The bones of her ankle were crushed and fragmented into many pieces resulting in multiple reconstructive surgeries, continuous intense pain, intensive rehab and lifelong disability. Throughout each step and without any instruction, with the empathy and nurturing instinct of a collie, Crowley identified the need and provided the solution. For many months the pain was excruciating. Crowley would drape himself over her torso providing the warmth and comfort of a weighted blanket while blocking some of the pain signals from travelling to her brain. When Ashley was able to move, Crowley was always at her side acting as a brace and support. Not surprisingly, Ashley suffers from PTSD. Crowley recognizes when things become overwhelming and intervenes. Sometimes the PTSD causes Ashley to have a cardiac arrythmia. Crowley identifies the problem often before Ashley does and alerts her. PTSD has made social situations difficult for Ashley. Crowley to the rescue. He, like most collies love to be the center of attention, and with his perfect manners, steps into the role of social lubricant, making everyone feel comfortable.
